Shrine of Remembrance
Description
The Shrine of Remembrance, located in Melbourne Victoria, is a national war memorial that was built to honour Australian veterans who served in the First World War and all other conflicts. Since its opening in 1934, the Shrine has served as a place of commemoration and remembrance for all Australians who have bravely served their country.
Step inside the Shrine and be transported to a world of peace and tranquillity. The Sanctuary, with its classical interior, offers a serene atmosphere where visitors can witness Ray of Light demonstrations every half hour. Take a stroll through the Galleries of Remembrance, which showcase more than 800 artworks and historical artifacts, including an original Gallipoli landing boat. The exhibits include personal belongings of Australian soldiers that tell the story of their experiences in conflicts and peacekeeping operations since the 1850s.
Families can enjoy a Shrine scavenger hunt with free activity cards available at the Visitor Centre every day. On Sundays, the Last Post Service takes place at 4.45 pm, complete with buglers, bagpipers and Shrine Guard in historic uniform. Additionally, guided tours are available every hour, except for midday.
